Job Title: Waste & Recycling FLT Operative
Location: Hull
Contract: Fixed Term 12 months – Full Time 36 hours per week
Working Pattern: Alternating weekly shifts:
- Week 1: Monday to Friday 5:00am–1:00pm
- Week 2: Monday to Friday 2:00pm–10:00pm
Rate of Pay: £13.45 per hour
About the Role
Sodexo is looking for a reliable and safety-focused Waste, Recycling & Forklift Truck Operative to join our team at the Smith & Nephew site in Hull.
This is a practical, physically active role responsible for the safe collection, movement and processing of waste and recyclable materials across the site. You'll operate a counterbalance forklift truck, support our recycling targets and ensure waste is handled safely and in line with environmental and Health & Safety requirements.
The role involves working early and late shifts, with occasional short notice shift changes to support the needs of the operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and remove waste from designated areas across the site
- Operate a counterbalance forklift truck, including driving on public highways as part of your duties
- Manually move, sort and process waste and recyclable materials
- Operate balers and compactors safely
- Support the safe handling, storage and removal of hazardous waste
- Complete waste transfer notes and other compliance documentation accurately and on time
- Follow all Safe Systems of Work, SOPs, COSHH and Health & Safety procedures
- Wear required PPE, including hi-vis clothing and safety footwear
- Support the site's recycling and zero-to-landfill objectives
- Assist with snow and ice clearance when required
- Report hazards, issues and customer concerns promptly to management
What We’re Looking For
- A current, full UK driving licence – essential as the forklift is driven on public highways
- A current Counterbalance Forklift Truck (FLT) licence
- Previous experience working within a waste or recycling environment
- A strong Health & Safety mindset and commitment to safe working practices
- Good understanding of manual handling and the correct use of PPE
- Reliable, punctual and comfortable carrying out physically demanding work
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Organised and methodical with the ability to identify, resolve and escalate issues
- Good communication skills and a professional approach
- Flexibility to work early and late shift patterns
Experience or training in COSHH, balers, compactors, hazardous waste or dangerous goods would be beneficial. Role-specific training will be provided where applicable.
