Job Introduction

Protect critical infrastructure. Drive compliance. Support those who serve.

At Sodexo, we know that safe, reliable estates are essential to supporting the Armed Forces. As a Technical Officer Mechanical at Merville Barracks, Colchester, CO2 7UT, you'll play a key role in ensuring our mechanical assets remain compliant, safe and operating efficiently across a busy Ministry of Defence site.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with strong mechanical building services or facilities management experience who is confident working with statutory compliance and technical standards. Experience as a Mechanical Authorised Person (AP), or the ability to achieve AP status, would be particularly valuable.

 What you’ll do:

  • Act as the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) for mechanical engineering services.
  • Provide higher-level technical oversight and support for planned and reactive mechanical maintenance, with a focus on compliance, technical assurance and complex engineering matters.
  • Support and undertake relevant Authorised Person (AP) and Responsible Person responsibilities across mechanical disciplines, which may include Mechanical, Gas, F-Gas, Petroleum and Pressure Systems, subject to competence and appointment.
  • Manage statutory inspections, insurance inspections and ensure remedial works are completed within required timescales.
  • Ensure mechanical assets remain compliant with all statutory and contractual requirements.
  • Support the management of the site's gas network, mechanical systems and associated infrastructure.
  • Maintain accurate asset registers, maintenance schedules and statutory records using the CAFM system (QFM).
  • Provide technical advice and support to engineering teams, projects and other departments.
  • Assist with project design reviews, lifecycle planning and the successful handover of new assets.
  • Manage subcontractors, monitor performance and carry out quality audits on completed works.
  • Complete and oversee Permit to Work documentation, service clearances and hot work permits.
  • Ensure all activities are delivered in line with Health & Safety legislation, JSP Safe Systems of Work and Sodexo procedures.
  • Build strong working relationships with the Ministry of Defence, Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), contractors and internal stakeholders.
  • Support continuous improvement, operational performance and budget objectives across the engineering function.
  • Participate in the site's on-call duty manager rota and provide technical support during planned and emergency situations.

What you bring:

  • Strong, demonstrable experience within mechanical engineering, including planned and reactive maintenance in commercial, industrial or Ministry of Defence environments.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical building services and engineering compliance.
  • Experience working with statutory inspections, planned maintenance and asset compliance.
  • Knowledge and experience relevant to Authorised Person (AP) responsibilities.
  • Excellent understanding of health, safety and quality management.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound technical decisions.
  • Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience using CAFM systems, Building Management Systems (BMS) and Microsoft Office.
  • A proactive, organised approach with excellent attention to detail.

Qualifications & Experience

We’re interested in candidates who can demonstrate relevant qualifications and/or equivalent demonstrable experience across the areas below. You do not necessarily need to hold every qualification listed – we’re looking for strong mechanical knowledge, technical competence and experience relevant to the role.

  • HNC or Level 4/5 qualification in Mechanical Building Services or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • IOSH qualification or relevant health and safety knowledge and experience.
  • The technical knowledge and experience required to achieve Authorised Person (AP) status.
  • Level 6 qualification, Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status or equivalent experience.
  • AP or Responsible Person qualifications/experience within Mechanical, Gas, F-Gas, Petroleum or Pressure Systems.
  • QA Auditor training or relevant quality assurance experience.
  • Experience within a Ministry of Defence environment and/or knowledge of JSP 375 Safe Systems of Work.
