As a Cooking Supervisor, you will support the day-to-day operation of the school kitchen by preparing nutritious, high-quality meals using School Food United and DRIVE recipes, while following the Allergen Management Process and maintaining accurate allergen records. You will work closely with the Catering Manager and Food Service Assistants to help ensure the smooth running of the kitchen, maintaining high standards of food quality, service, hygiene, and food safety at all times.

This is a hands-on role where you will supervise the daily activities of the kitchen team, allocate tasks as required, and provide support during service to ensure an efficient operation. You will also act as a front-line ambassador for Sodexo, delivering a welcoming, professional, and customer-focused service to pupils, staff, visitors, and customers while ensuring compliance with all statutory and company policies and procedures.

What You’ll Do:

  • Prepare meals using School Food United and DRIVE recipes, following the Allergen Management Process and creating or reviewing allergen records as required.
  • Prepare and present food to company standards, ensuring full knowledge of allergen information prior to every service.
  • Maintain consistently high standards of food quality, presentation, service, hygiene, and cleanliness.
  • Support the Catering Manager with the day-to-day supervision of the kitchen, allocating daily tasks and supporting Food Service Assistants to ensure an efficient service.
  • Act as a front-line ambassador for Sodexo, delivering a welcoming, efficient, and professional service at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements and company policies relating to food safety, allergen management, health and safety, and hygiene.
  • Receive deliveries, record required temperatures, and store stock correctly in accordance with Safeguard procedures.
  • Assist in loading and replenishing service counters, ensuring sufficient stock throughout service while following company style guides and current promotions.
  • Carry out the cleaning of kitchen equipment, walls (up to 6ft), floors, fixtures, and fittings in accordance with the cleaning schedule.
  • Ensure all work areas and equipment are left clean, organised, and ready for use.
  • Maintain high standards of personal hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Respond appropriately to incidents including fire, theft, damaged goods, unfit food, accidents, or other irregularities, reporting them as required.
  • Handle customer queries and complaints professionally, escalating where appropriate.
  • Assist with catering for special events, including occasional work outside normal working hours.
  • Provide cover and support at other local Sodexo locations when required.
  • Attend meetings, training sessions, and development opportunities, including travel where necessary.
  • Keep up to date with company communications and best practice initiatives.

Essential:

  • Experience cooking on a large scale (100–1300 students)

  • Experience following recipes in a professional kitchen

  • Prior staff supervision or line management experience

  • Strong knowledge of fresh produce and ingredient preparation

  • Understanding of health and safety regulations and the ability to enforce them

  • Ability to work under pressure in a busy kitchen environment

  • Positive leadership, professionalism, and a passion for food

  • Hold basic food handling certifications, including:

    • NVQ Level 2

    • Level 2 Food Safety Certificate

  • At least one year of hands-on cooking experience (Training in Food Hygiene and Health & Safety provided)

  • Flexibility to support different sites, functions, and working hours when required
  • Proactive attitude in handling issues, incidents, and customer feedback
  • Willingness to undertake training and continuous professional development
