Your Role as a Catering Assistant
As a Catering Assistant at HMP Northumberland, you will play a vital role in supporting the rehabilitation of prisoners through purposeful activity. This hands-on role involves instructing and supervising prisoners in preparing meals in accordance with approved recipes and hygiene standards. You’ll ensure meals are produced efficiently and safely, while maintaining a clean and secure kitchen environment.
You will also contribute to the smooth operation of the catering service by managing stock, monitoring equipment maintenance needs, and ensuring food safety and security protocols are adhered to. This position is key to promoting positive engagement and structure for prisoners, while upholding Sodexo’s high standards for health, safety, and operational excellence. Full training will be provided on kitchen security procedures.

The Ideal Candidate
Essential:
- Catering qualifications such as City & Guilds 7061/7062 or NVQ equivalent
- Intermediate level Food Hygiene Certificate
- Experience in bulk or high-volume catering
- Up-to-date knowledge of Food Safety Standards and Allergen Awareness
- Awareness of calorie counts and nutritional considerations in menu planning
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team
- Strong commitment to security, health and safety procedures
Desirable:
- Experience working in secure or custodial environments
- Supervisory experience in a catering or food service setting
- Knowledge of kitchen stock control and equipment maintenance processes
