Purpose of the Job:

The Gardener is responsible for maintaining designated sites to agreed specifications and quality standards. This role involves working independently or as part of a team to ensure that grounds and horticultural areas are maintained according to client requirements and within the guidelines of health and safety, risk assessments, and best practices.

Main Responsibilities:

Grounds Maintenance & Horticultural Tasks:

  • Grass Cutting: Ensure that grassed areas are regularly maintained to required standards.

  • Hedge & Shrub Maintenance: Trim, prune, and maintain hedges and shrub beds to specification.

  • Tree Pruning: Carry out necessary pruning of trees to maintain health and safety.

  • Weed Management: Remove weeds from plant beds, pathways, and grassed areas.

  • Bedding & Turf Maintenance: Maintain annual bedding and fine turf areas.

  • Watering: Water plants, beds, and plant containers regularly.

  • Waste Removal: Collect and remove waste resulting from maintenance activities.

  • Gritting & Snow Clearance: Perform gritting and snow clearance during adverse weather conditions.

  • Hard Surface Maintenance: Maintain paths, driveways, and hard surfaces in good condition.

  • Self-Grown Initiatives: Assist with self-grown initiatives to increase shrubs in approved locations.

Ad Hoc & Seasonal Tasks:

  • Respond to and manage seasonal weather-related tasks, such as sweeping rainwater to drains and preparing the site for adverse weather.

  • Perform general site maintenance duties, including waste collection, porter duties, and litter picking.

Reporting & Compliance:

  • Report regularly to the Grounds Maintenance Coordinator or Line Manager on progress and issues.

  • Ensure all tasks are carried out in compliance with on-site policies, procedures, and relevant risk assessments.

  • Follow health and safety guidelines, including COSHH and GMP standards.

Equipment & Tools Management:

  • Ensure equipment is used safely and properly maintained.

  • Keep tools and materials in good working order and store them in designated locations.

  • Clean and return all tools and equipment after use.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Understanding of health & safety, risk assessments, and COSHH guidelines.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Self-motivated with a flexible approach to the role.

  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients, customers, and colleagues.

  • Strong time management and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.

  • Willingness to undergo training and develop new skills as required.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice).

  • Forklift Truck License and experience.

  • Experience in general site maintenance activities (e.g., porterage, waste collection, cleaning, and weather preparations).

  • Experience working on manufacturing or industrial sites.

  • Experience as a banksman (handling logistics and safety for vehicles).
