  • 40 hours per week (Shifts 06:00-14:30 and 14:00-22:30)  
  • Working: Monday to Friday & every fourth weekend  (Will need to participate in out of hours “on call rota”)

What You’ll Be Doing


  • Carry out a verbal hand over at 14.00hrs during school days after which, two janitors carry out litter picking duties and the other two janitors check crush areas toilets daily.
  • Janitors will participate in out of hours “on call rota” to suit staffing circumstances at any particular time.
  • Normally, an on call rota will be promulgated on a 2 monthly basis and agreed prior to implementation. After agreement, no change is permitted and janitors are expected to fulfil their agreed commitments during each 2 month period. Only in very exceptional or unforeseen circumstances of staff absences, will consideration be given to a change to these arrangements, which must be authorised by a Sodexo manager. 
  • Company mobile phones are issued to Janitors for business reasons only and during “on call periods” Use of personal mobile phones in school is not permitted during working hours except in the event of an unforeseen emergency. 
  • In conjunction with and in agreement with other members of staff, undertake school or community additional use weekend overtime working as required. 
  • Work flexible hours, sometimes at short notice, to ensure contractual obligations are met.
  • Carry out routine patrols throughout the school and sports halls at least every 90mins whilst the building is occupied paying particular attention to unauthorised access and security of fire exit doors. 
  • Manage and maintain security of all building keys. 
  • Maintain a visual presence in circulation areas during pupil morning and lunch breaks. Carry out routine checks of crush area toilets after school registration, after morning break, after lunch and at the end of the school day. 
  • During community hours with more than one janitor on shift, one janitor will provide support to community staff and security of building whilst the other deals with PPM’s and reactive building maintenance tasks. 
  • Apply a common sense approach and demonstrate a responsible and helpful attitude at all times whilst operating in the school during contact with members of staff and the public. 
  • Understand and operate building fire and security systems and display professional competency when dealing with the emergency services. 
  • Undertake planned and reactive maintenance tasks around the school, including basic electrical, plumbing, decoration and joinery tasks. 
  • Assist with snow/ice clearance, during winter period, maintaining safe access to the school for building users during school and community use days and weekend community use as required. 
  • Carry out traffic management duties at end of school day and during specific school/community use events when required. 
  • Demonstrate high integrity and achieve a high level of customer satisfaction for all Fife Council users. Adopt a courteous and polite approach at all times when interfacing with all Fife Council staff and members of the public. 
  • Staff conduct at all times must be in a responsible and appropriate manner whilst working in a challenging environment dealing with young people, Fife Council staff and members of the public. 
  • Achieve and maintain a full working knowledge of all areas of the school. 
  • Respond to all Sodexo helpdesk calls in a timely manner consistent with SLA following notification by helpdesk. 
  • Ensure contract paperwork is completed in a timely manner, (only by the person completing the task) where there is more than one person involved only one person should complete and sign the paperwork. 
  • Complete planned and reactive building maintenance tasks in a timely manner completing documentation accurately. 
  • Provide proactive and helpful support to cleaning staff to ensure Sodexo contractual commitments are met. 
  • Maintain vigilance and report any building fabric or equipment defects and report to Sodexo helpdesk. 
  • Attend and participate in appropriate training courses applicable to the work and participate in Health & Safety briefs, toolbox talks as required.
