Job Summary

Support the Senior Management Team in ensuring the safe operation and compliance of hospital infrastructure. Manage electrical, decontamination, mechanical, and building systems, oversee contractors, and enforce safety protocols in line with HTM00 to HTM08 standards and all statutory regulations within a critical healthcare environment.

What you’ll do

  • Competently manage fault diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems including heating, cooling, steam, hot water, ventilation, medical gas, and refrigeration systems, ensuring compliance with regulations and HTM requirements.
  • Deliver planned and reactive maintenance services, including out-of-hours support via a call-out roster, ensuring high standards and cost-effective service delivery.
  • Support the Engineering Management team in meeting contractual obligations by producing required documentation, monitoring response times, and maintaining commercial compliance to avoid service failures or penalties.
  • Oversee and manage the safe operation of plant and equipment, including the Permit to Work system and Safe Systems of Work, while providing hands-on support and leadership to the engineering team as needed.
  • Provide technical advice, professional support, and training to staff, supervisors, and Trust officers to foster a collaborative and skilled team environment.
  • Utilise IT systems such as CAFM and BMS for monitoring, reporting, and ensuring Quality Assurance compliance.
  • Actively address compliance failures, investigate causes, and implement solutions to enhance performance and operational standards.
  • Represent Hard FM in working groups, ensuring adherence to Health and Safety legislation, while maintaining effective communication with Trust managers and clinical/non-clinical staff at all levels.

What you’ll bring

Essential

  • Completion of a C&G/BTEC or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, alongside a recognised apprenticeship or substantial experience within the mechanical trade.
  • Skilled in diagnosing, fault-finding, and hands-on repair of mechanical systems and equipment, with the ability to read technical drawings and apply logical problem-solving under pressure.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable to changing priorities, with strong verbal and written communication skills, including report writing and a good level of mathematical ability.
  • Proficient in Health and Safety regulations and computer literate, preferably with experience in building management systems.
  • Prepared to participate in call-out rotas and committed to continuous professional development through internal and external courses.

Desirable

  • Experience in Electrical Engineering Maintenance, with a background in healthcare settings and specialist knowledge relevant to the healthcare environment, including steam and refrigeration systems.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary trade groups, demonstrating maturity and strong teamwork skills.
  • Prior experience in the health service context, applying technical expertise to meet the specific demands of the sector.
